Crack Sealing: Keeping Our Roads Safe While Minimizing Traffic Disruptions

As part of its ongoing commitment to highway maintenance and public safety, the Regina Bypass team’s crack sealing program was designed to ensure a smooth, safe drive for all users.

One unique feature of their approach is the use of a single-lane, straight-line convoy method — a strategy that minimizes traffic disruptions while allowing crews to work efficiently and safely.

Crack sealing is a proactive maintenance technique where specially formulated sealant is applied to cracks in the asphalt to prevent water and debris from entering and causing further pavement deterioration.
It’s a cost-effective way to extend the lifespan of a road surface and delay more intensive repairs down the line.

To keep drivers and workers safe, Regina Bypass crews follow strict traffic management protocols. All service vehicles line up in a straight formation in one lane, clearly indicating an active work zone ahead.

This not only helps direct traffic smoothly through the area but also creates a protective buffer for crews working on the road. Drivers are reminded to slow to 60 km/h in all construction zones—an important step in ensuring everyone gets home safely.

“We understand that construction can be an inconvenience, but safety for everyone, workers and drivers, is always our top priority,” says Christophe Martin, General Manager of the Regina Bypass. “By organizing our vehicles in a single lane and clearly marking our work areas, we’re doing our part to reduce traffic disruptions and keep our workers safe. We’re asking drivers to do their part too—slow down, stay alert, and respect the signs.”

The crack sealing process will take place in several locations along the Bypass over the coming months, depending on weather conditions and traffic patterns.
